Episode 2: Typography
Type is everywhere. Every print publication, website, movie, advertisement and public message involves the creation or selection of a fitting typeface. Online, a rich and artistic typographical culture exists, where typefaces are created and graphic design seeps in to every image.
In episode 2 of Off Book, typeface designers Jonathan Hoefler and Tobias Frere-Jones outline the importance of selecting the right font to convey a particular feeling. Graphic designer Paula Scher talks about building identity in messaging, while Eddie Opara uses texture to create reaction. Infographic designers Julia Vakser and Deroy Peraza map complicated data sets into digestible imagery, mixing color, graphics and type.

Designed by Jurjen Versteeg as a possible title sequence for a fictitious documentary, this film shows a history of the title sequence in a nutshell. The sequence includes all the names of title designers who had a revolutionary impact on the history and evolution of the title sequence. The names of the title designers all refer to specific characteristics of the revolutionary titles that they designed.
This film refers to elements such as the cut and shifted characters of Saul Bass' Psycho title, the colored circles of Maurice Binder's design for Dr. No and the contemporary designs of Kyle Cooper and Danny Yount.

I love title sequences and this short film is a master class in the artform. Jurjen should use this film to create a Kickstarter project and actually produce the documentary.
Typography Insight is an accessible, affordable iPad app (just $1.99) that sprang from Dong Yoon Park’s master’s thesis.
While at Parsons, Park says he realized that it was difficult for students in introductory typography classes to see the subtle differences between historically important typefaces, especially when viewed on paper.
Park’s app, Typography Insight, makes it easier to see and compare these detailed shapes. The iPad’s interactive nature even lets you manipulate the typefaces.

This is a brilliant execution of a simple idea, how to teach typography. His thesis is interesting.

With its ever evolving interface and constantly growing user base Facebook is trying very hard to be the center of the online world. And it's working. 80% of universities are looking at profiles as part of the admission process, today Warner Bros. started renting movies right on Facebook and a recent study shows that checking out your profile improves self-esteem. Even the ubiquitous game Angry Birds is expected to launch on Facebook in the near future.
Soon, for a whole generation of users, there will be no internet, no web, there will only be Facebook.
