An Invocation for Beginnings. Turning the dial from 0 to 1. Ze Frank Is Back!

I believe that is the first time I’ve used an ! on a title. I’m not a fan of the over use of !. But this ! is well earned, cause damn it Ze Frank is back. I must have known, in the back of my mind, that he was coming back today, cause over the weekend I could not stop thinking about his old shows, my favorites like long lost friends. I am surprised at how much I missed his verbosity.

So, do as the man says, and start something.

Fish: The Best App/Essay/Manifesto I've Seen In Years

Fish: A Tap Essay

Writer Robin Sloan has created one of my new favorites, one of those things that enter your life and fit like they’ve been there forever.

He has created something truly marvelous that is in essence, well, here is how he describes it: “a short but heartfelt manifesto about the difference between liking something on the internet and loving something on the internet.”

I won’t say much more, no spoilers here, just go download it, it’s free, and take in what he has to say and how he has expressed it.

I’ve already read it more than once.

Ideas: Five Minutes With Philosopher Alain de Botton

Writer Alain de Botton talks to Matthew Stadlen about the point of reading, his relationship with ideas, how one life philosophy is never enough and why he hopes his children will never read a book.

Ten rules for writing fiction continued

Zadie Smith

1 When still a child, make sure you read a lot of books. Spend more time doing this than anything else.

2 When an adult, try to read your own work as a stranger would read it, or even better, as an enemy would.

3 Don’t romanticise your “vocation”. You can either write good sentences or you can’t. There is no “writer’s lifestyle”. All that matters is what you leave on the page.

4 Avoid your weaknesses. But do this without telling yourself that the things you can’t do aren’t worth doing. Don’t mask self-doubt with contempt.

5 Leave a decent space of time between writing something and editing it.

6 Avoid cliques, gangs, groups. The presence of a crowd won’t make your writing any better than it is.

7 Work on a computer that is disconnected from the internet.

8 Protect the time and space in which you write. Keep everybody away from it, even the people who are most important to you.

9 Don’t confuse honours with achievement.

10 Tell the truth through whichever veil comes to hand – but tell it. Resign yourself to the lifelong sadness that comes from never being satisfied.
